Horse sense….Tribune Review Jan 09

The cost of buying a horse is often less than the cost of maintaining it for a year. Here are some of the things you’ll need to consider when thinking about owning a horse:

Feed: An average 1,000-pound horse eats about 20 pounds of hay and grain a day and will drink at least 8 gallons of water.

Teeth: Should be checked and ground at least once a year by a qualified person.

Vaccinations: At least once a year. Age, use, individual health and time of year influence vaccination program.

Internal parasite control: A horse should be de-wormed four to six times a year.

Foot care: Hooves should be trimmed every six to eight weeks.

Grooming: Horses need to be brushed regularly so they can fluff up their hair, which keeps them warm.
